About the Captains

BVI Cruising Guide is written by Cory and Emily Busichio, a captain and chef team who ran crewed charter yachts in the British Virgin Islands and now live aboard their own 55 foot sailboat.

Bareboat skipper first, charter captain second

Cory grew up sailing and racing on the Chesapeake Bay and first came to the BVI on a family charter in the 1990s. His family later owned three boats in a BVI bareboat fleet, and from 2005 to 2017 he skippered bareboat charters here himself, making the same mistakes and asking the same questions every visiting skipper does.

From 2019 to 2024 Cory and Emily ran crewed charter catamarans as captain and chef, including several full seasons in the BVI, and were voted Crew of the Year in 2022 across the fleet they sailed with. Along the way they sailed every island in the Windwards and Leewards, crossed the Atlantic and logged more than 25,000 miles. Cory is also a dive master, a kitesurf and paddleboard instructor and a commercial pilot, which is where the obsession with weather comes from.

Why we wrote this guide

Most of what is online about chartering in the BVI is written to sell you something. We wanted the guide we would hand a friend the night before their first charter: where to take a ball and where not to trust your anchor, which bays close out in a north swell, what each month is really like, and what to skip.

Everything here is first hand. When we do not know, we say so, and when somewhere is not worth your time, we say that too.

How the site pays for itself

The guide is free. We are charter brokers: if you would like help choosing a bareboat, tell us your plans, and if you would rather have a captain and chef do the work, we book bareboats through Caribbean Bareboats and crewed yachts through Get Crewed. You pay the same price as booking direct. We will never recommend an anchorage, a bar or a boat because someone paid us to.
