The 2026 Atlantic hurricane season has been the quietest start in the modern record. That is good news for anyone booked on a late autumn BVI charter. It is not a reason to skip the insurance.
The numbers so far
- Five named tropical storms by 10 September 2026: Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, Dolly and Edouard. None became a hurricane.
- That is the longest wait for a first Atlantic hurricane since satellite records began in 1966. The old record was 11 September, set in 2002 and matched in 2013.
- A sixth tropical depression formed on 19 September.
- None of the named storms hit the Virgin Islands. The remains of Dolly brought heavy rain and thunderstorms through the Antilles at the end of August.
Why it has been so quiet
A strong El Nino. Warm water in the Pacific drives strong upper level winds across the Caribbean and the tropical Atlantic, and that wind shear tears storms apart before they can organise. Forecasters measured the strongest shear between the Caribbean and West Africa since 1979. NOAA called this in May, forecasting a below normal season of 8 to 14 named storms and 3 to 6 hurricanes.
What a charter crew should take from it
- The season still runs to 30 November. A quiet year lowers the odds. It does not remove them. It only takes one storm on your week.
- October and November are the value months. Rates are at their lowest and the moorings are empty. In a year like this the weather risk that keeps people away is smaller than usual.
- Insure the trip. Buy travel insurance that names hurricanes and tropical storms, and read your charter company’s storm policy before you pay the balance. Most will move or refund a charter when a named storm threatens. Get that in writing.
- El Nino does not change the winter. The Christmas winds still arrive in December, with 16 to 20 knots as the norm and 20 to 28 when a front passes to the north.
